Battery charging

I have some questions which I hope the electronically-knowledgeable among you might answer.
I have a pack of rechargeable NiMH batteries (nominally 6V, 2.7 Ah) that I charge using a home-made charger. The method I use is to charge them at 0.27 A (the Ah rating divided by 10) for 14 hours. If my charger doesn't work properly, and it will only give me 0.135 A (for the sake of easy maths), should I then charge for 28 hours?
If I bought a smart charger, would I be able to wire it up to this battery pack?

First answer is approximately yes .

If your smart charger understands NiMH cells then it will be ok.

For reference, the correct way to charge them is to use a constant current source and charge until the voltage levels off.
