Buffs are modern garments which had not been invented when I was young.
One would be useful to stop my head getting sun burnt when walking across the Lanzarote lava fields in places where a caving helmet would attract the wrong kind of attention from the park wardens.

With advancing years comes decreasing insulation up above...

I've not got to the stage of having a few rabbits tattooed onto my scalp yet -

but one of those Buff things would come in very handy for keeping the top of my head warm.
