Canyoning/Gorge Walking in Wales

The outdoor companies advertise their canyon/gorge outings as near LLangollen but I have lost a whole day around Llangollen looking for every possible river/gorge/canyon and couldn't find anything worth doing.

There are some clips on You tube of a gorge walking with an outdoor llangollen based company and it's possible to see exactly where it starts

It looks like a reservoir/lake/weir
Does anyone know where this is?

There are 2 to be done around LLangollen, an easy one and a more commited one. Any ideas where they are?

A good hour's drive from Llangollen, but could be Dolgarrog gorge possibly. The lake, trees and dam could tie in.

Looks like Cynwyd reservoir - Dolgarrog Gorge is bigger and steeper.
Beware of flash flooding if venturing near Dolgarrog Gorge due to the design of the floodgates at the reservoir.

Try the 'Torrent Walk@ at Dolgeau (excuse the spelling) in winter when its in spate. A cracking short gorge that you have to gerry rig because no ones bolted it.

Thanks guys
It seems to be Cynwyd reservoir.
I was looking down in Cynwyd village thus why I didn't find anything as the reservoir seems to be by the forest, up in Corwen.
Is this any good in the summer? Everything seemed pretty dry around there last week even with all the heavy rain nights.

Neraby(ish)  Fairy Glen gorge/canyon in Betws Y Coed up to the Conwy Falls was in full spate.

Does anyone know best place to park for Dolgarrog gorge? Before of after the bridge (if coming from North) in Dolgarrog village or to start from the top maybe better to park by Pont Newydd and start from there, a little after the reservoir's dam?

Has anyone done this?

Also is there a line I can call to check the opening of the gates?

Thanks

RE Canyoning - i recently used 'CALL OF THE WILD' based near danny south wales - was ?60 for the day canyoning and i found it to be very good value (lots of adrenaline), i would highly recommend this company. www.callofthewild.co.uk

Thanks J4nny

Where is Danny? I go a lot to South Wales but never heard of this place.

Do you remember which canyon you went to? or the name of the Village?

I do agree that paying to go with a Company it's great but I have only done this the first time. After doing it for several years I prefer to do it on my own terms with my group of friends instead of with a group of strangers.

Dinas Rock is the place where it all started for me (canyoning/gorge scrambling).

I had a one day gorge scrambling with Black Mountains (I think) and got hooked on it and as I already had all the gear started doing it with friends and now am always looking for bigger and longer gorges/canyons (same principle we use for caving I suppose)

By the way have you been to the silica mines at Dinas Rock? Not the entrance the divers use but the big one by the bridge (old tram entrance I think)? I have checked inside a bit but would like to know how long is it?

Anyone?

There is a book ...

There are 3 mines here.  This is the longest:

No 3  UPPER SILICA MINE SN 9164 0795  The most extensive mine in the area, and the most recent, is found on the north bank of the Sychrhyd 200m upstream of Bwa Maen, and has three entrances which face the river, and a further ten on the northern side. The triple entrance is to the left of the bridge, and is the mine most frequented by cavers.  This is probably the most extensive mine in the area.  The upper series is practically a veritable huge chamber where the `Pillar and Stall' method of mining is well illustrated.  This large chamber leads towards several alternative entrances in the side of the hill.  The large entrance chamber can be followed to the right down dip for a short distance to the flooded section.  However, to the left the huge Pillar and Stall chamber leads up dip for some distance only to drop down dip again onto a passage which runs across the whole length of the mine.  Above this passage various `entrances' lead to the huge chamber while below is flooded.

The flooded level consists of six levels varying in depth of up to -22m, according to the amount of rainfall, and between 80m and 250m in length.  Each level has similar structure and appearance, consisting of square solid walls throughout.  This mine is considered as an ideal site for underwater cave diving and photography.
