Caves in Coldstone Quarry (Greenhows)

Spent this week just gone doing some work in Coldstone Quarry that belongs to Howdens.  In the quarry there are several cavelets and cave entrances.  Talking to Shirley (Quarry Manager) and Bob Orange (Site Manager) they informed me that the caves are known and are generally short in length being largely filed with glacial debris. On one of the old quarry faces (2nd tier) there is an entrance to a cave that has been surveyed.  Out of couriosity I was wondering if anyone has any information about the Coldstone Quarry caves as info in Northern Caves seems quite sparse.

Your best source of information may well be a certain Greenhow resident who became noted for having a long stay in Stump Cross Caverns in the 1960s.

Send me a PM and I can probably help you.

Many thanks for the contact - I will follow this up

Does anyone know if their are references to caves in the quarry in the Yorkshire Cave Directory/list? - I am assuming there is such a thing.  Or anything in the relevant Northern cave publication - as I don't have a copy of this to hand?

Thanks

There's nothing listed in the Northern Caves database starting with "Coldstones". I just glanced through all the entries in the Stump Cross area chapter (in the new database) and couldn't see anything which sounds like your caves. (The same applies to the present edition of Northern Caves Volume 1.)

The bloke I suggested you contact is almost certainly the best place to start. If that draws a blank send me a PM and I can maybe suggest one or two other folk to ask.

Many years ago I did Pendleton Pipe, a partially natural mineworking in an opencut very close to Coldstones Quarry with two entrances where the opencut intersected the system.  Total length was about 300ft of muddy chambers and bouldery sections.  It was quarried away, I think, about 30 years ago.
