Caves in Greenland

Hi,

Does anyone know anything about any caves in Greenland that are relatively accessible (i.e. not several days hike over the glacier)? Any type of cave is fine - small/large/rock/glacier etc.

I have a photo of a possible entrance in Northern Greenland that is seriously inaccessible.

When I've a moment I'll send you a copy.

Thanks Graham, that's most unhelpful, but I'd like to see the photo anyway.

Thanks for these genuinely useful replies, that doesn't happen often on UKcaving!! Googling things about Greenland tends to bring up lots of pretty pictures or fascinating facts but nothing useful.

Johannes, I'm considering visiting the Disko Bay area where Bings Hule is. If I go there I'll try to find the cave so I can see a small example of a non Karstic cave.

Martin, good idea, I'll look into some journals for more information.

Just back from a cave gate collecting trip in North Wales.  I looked out my BBS 17 ans DVD and found another 27 refs.  If you need the refs it will cost you ?100, which is about what the disc cost me  :)

Screw that! Sally, we probably have a set in the Library. Ask Tony.

Graham - is the inaccessible entrance the picture that was being used to try to convince Gina to go to Greenland a few years ago? If so I'm sure Sally should have already seen it.

I imagine so, yes, though I don't remember Gina seeing it.

Which probably means I showed it to her ...

So Gina had the choice of either Greenland..
...or the Turks and Caicos islands.

Tough choice  :-\

Yes it is the same cave.

I have spent a bit of time looking into getting there, but of course nothing is set in stone yet.

Hi Sally-J, Johannes and others!
If you are going to Disko Bay, maybe you can manage a trip to Uummannaq to visit Troll's Grotto, and from Uummannaq a boat trip to Mummy cave (Qilakitsoq ruins).
However it is likely that these two (probably non-karstic) caves do not exceed several meters in length, I did not go there. All my information about these 3 caves (with Cave Bings Hule) come from "Lonely Planet: Greenland and the Arctic".
To my knowledge, the only known karstic caves are located far in North Greenland. Have a nice trip ! Greenland is beautiful !
Graham, I would also like to see the possible entrance !
Good caving to all !
