CDG NL 228 Jul 2023

Has this gone out to subscribers or is it still in production/despatch?

I got Jan and April together in April.

All the best,

This was posted on the CDG Facebook page by the distribution officer...

July and October newsletters will be sent out together again. This is because where treasurer Jason resigned, it's taken a while for bank account to be handed over to Martin Wright for reimbursement of expenses and now that we are where we are it makes sense to wait til October and do two together because it's cheaper for the CDG and I wouldnt now be able to send July's out til September anyway
We'll go back to quarterly sendings from January

If cost is an issue, I would happily see an increase in subscription costs to support continued production of CDG NLs on paper and cover increased postage costs.

At present, £15 per annum including postage is a good deal for subscribers at £3.75 per issue which I doubt covers production/postage even for the marginal number of non-member subscribers over and above the section members for whom it is included in CDG membership fees.

For comparison, Descent is now £46.50 for annual subscription including postage, approaching £8 per issue.

Maybe increasing CDG NL subscription to £30 per year for non-members to include both postage and access to online back issues might be a way forward? A proportion of this would support the online archive/website costs too.

Looking forward to ‘yesterday’s papers’ in October!

All the best,

Andy

Psychocrawler's words above reveal once again how much the (real, physical) CDG Newsletter is valued by folk who aren't active cave divers.

Strenuous efforts will be made to get the October edition to the printers as early as possible, so you can have your July edition as soon as the October one is distributed.

The copy date is just 19 days away (as I type) - so not too long to wait.

Eyup Langcliffe - that's the point.

There's something I need to mention (which I suspect you may not be aware of) next time our paths cross. Let's chat then.

I just have difficulty in understanding the purpose of the parenthetical phrase in your sentence "Psychocrawler's words above reveal once again how much the (real, physical) CDG Newsletter is valued by folk who aren't active cave divers.".

My CDG membership seems to have lapsed some years back without reminders. I've given up trying to rejoin having contacted individuals from top to bottom both nationally and in the Somerset Section. I get promised it will be sorted but nothing happens. I might not be an active cave diver but I enjoyed reading about exploration expecially when you have done some yourself and know the environment.

Assuming it was the Somerset Section you were a member of, I think they're the most appropriate folk to deal with this. Secretary or Treasurer ought to be able to sort you out. Maybe you could get to a Section meeting? (I don't know dates but it's a small world on Mendip and I'm sure people can tell you.)

We need experienced people like you to be involved, whether or not you're actively cave diving at the moment.

Is it possible to get the CDG newsletter, in either paper or online form, without being a diver?
Yes, you can be a subscriber; I think the necessary info is on the website.

Email me directly if you want to follow this up but hit problems.

Has this July NL 228 and the October NL 229 gone out to subscribers or is it still in production/despatch?

All the best,

I saw George last weekend and he was aiming to get it out this week, so if it's not on the way, it will be very soon.

Given that it's the work of volunteers, I'll refrain from criticising the delay. I wouldn't do a better job, so I'll keep my head down until it arrives 😘
