'Clogwyn y Garreg' Mine

I had a look down here 20+ years ago, so tonight's visit was just to have a bit of a comb over the dumps. Much to my surprise, the adit was open. I'm sure it wans't when I was last there. Open passage, with about 2' of water and a bit of a draught. I wan't expecting this and didn't have a torch, so this will need another visit. Above the adit there are various scrapings and the possible remains of a shaft with customary rusty barbed wire in it. The dumps and the mine in general seem to be spectacularly lacking in mineralisation - apart from white quartz. The other mines in the valley are generally formed just under the Carnedd y Ffiliast grit, and so is this, being either just under or within the beds that form Clogwyn y Garreg - the prominent hillock at the head of the valley.

I'm not sure what the mine is called. Wilkinson just has it down as 'Level'.

Oops. yes grid ref is SH 5546 5376

There another level - according to Wilkinson at SH 5519 5340, but I've not found that yet. Not sure if it's above or below the road. I suspect below.

It's not one I have been able to get to (it's a little out of the way). The nearest has be Drws y Coed just a little further on. Not especially large but very pretty. I guess your find will have some of the good blue stuff inside? :D

If you want exotic minerals in that area, you might like to take a look at an old trial level at about 450m altitude, north west of Mynydd Mawr summit. It is by a path about 250m north west of Avalanch Gully. I guess the grid ref is about SH 5330 5537. I picked up a lump of molybdenite the size of a small fist there.

Oof... I guess you mean the one surrounded by a fence with what I took to be rubbishy vaguely irony rocks then.

That's worth another look then.

That sounds like the place. It did not used to have a fence round it, but I have just looked at it on Google Earth. . Lots of pyrite and iron staining.

Looking at the pile of rocks in front of the adit I am wondering if its been reopened at some time..

This was open at least 2-3 years ago pretty sure there is another open adit near by too.
Didn't have any gear with me at the time and it was quite wet looking

I have only been there twice, more than half a century ago, so my memory is a bit faded. I don't remember more than one adit, but I think there was a bit of work on the vein outcrop. Some keen fellow ought to go up there and get us some good photos!
