am going to dentdale in a few months and am looking for somewhere to stay for about 8 people, fairly cheap, must be near a pub - is whernside manor any good? - it looks a bit further from the pub than would be ideal after a hard day out? any views on this/ better recommendations? Purpose of trip is a stag do so may take them caving (probably alum or valley ent) - anyone got any good ideas for anything else for a mix of unfit, young and old town folk?!!

thanks,

graham

Sorry dont know any where local but what ever you do dont use Southerscales Cottage. It has been closed as the Fire Service condemed it and it is dangerous

Yes and no fire extingushers, blankets, oil containers next to the fire, delapidated and derilct barn several feet away. Escape doors upstairs kept permanently locked, back downstairs door locked with no key for people renting the cottage. Last time the owners were charging ?440 per week in the summer. Gold mine for them, Death trap for guests!!!!

Wherever you find, don't stay anywhere near the river. I got eaten alive when I stayed at the old Dentdale Youth Hostel. It must have the highest midge density of anywhere in the galaxy.

Chris.

I stayed at the Whernside manor bunkhouse about a month back and it was crap. It was ?10 a night for a cold, damp drafty shithole, where if you turned the heater and the oven on at the same time the electricity trips - definitely not recommended. Plus its all in one room, so if people want to go to bed early its not really possible if everyone is still up getting pissed.

One place I would recommend is the bunkhouse in Kingsdale, just up the road from the Marton arms (Dentdale is only about 10 miles away following the Kingsdale road) - here's the website http://www.yorkshirenet.co.uk/stayat/westview/ - that place was lovely.

The last time I was up there, about 5 years ago, I found a farm with a caravan outside the milking parlour about a mile upriver from Tub Holes.  He was charging ?100 a week including heating etc and it was comfortable enough.  There were four of us so it's probably a bit small if there's a large group.  Sorry but I can't remember the name of the farm.

why not try one of the local cave huts, cant say I am any sort of expert with in the area in question, but have heard the YSS hut is very good and near a pub.
also you have the RRCPC hut, but if your criteria is "near a pub" then it wont fill your needs but you can always take your own supplys. ;)

Condor Farm, run by Mick & Wendy offer camping and caravans and you can get a breakfast. Only 2 mins to the pubs. And for your delight  cave pics in the toilets!

The YSS is ultra handy the pub serves food and excellent ales. The hostel is a fiver and has everything that you will need, close to Dent dale and no midges. That is where i would put my money, try their website for further info :beer2:
