DOWBERGILL SOLO

Hey guys! been a while since i last visited, haven't had access to the internet for a while due to moving outta my folks house.
Had been thinking about soloing dowbergill passage for a while, but my luck with the weather is anything but sweet, so whenever the time felt right, the weather was wrong. To say i was relieved to be closing the lid on providence pot prior to embarking on what turned out to be a rather surreal epic, would be an understatement, i'd been waiting weeks for this, another week would have driven me into the depths of depression.
The first few minutes were the only time i thought about trip as a whole, THEN! it hit me, how big a deal it was and not something that an be completed swiftly and from then on, all i thought about was putting one foot in front of another, one obstacle at a time, knowing full wel that each step, was a step closer to the end. By the time i'd reached bridge cavern the whole experience just didn't seem real and there were moments, when if i'd only thought of it at the time, should have attempted to pinch myself.
Had become so dehydrated on one of the climbs that the nasty traverses and rather hairy descent became nothing more than a trivial path back to the sacred water. Managed to bypass the second to last climb(impossible due to water levels on last visit), via a low long prolonged duck, minus the helmet and everything, started to shake uncontrollably at this point due to a ten minute break in thigh deep water while i rolled a cigarette which was enough to cool me to a point of no return. After what seemed like ages in neck deep water i reached a deadend SHIT! i really need to get outta this water(was wearing wetsuit and boilersuit, but wetsuit was only 3mm thick, not very warm in the water but enough to warm the body quickly once out) i'd remembered a hole in the false floor a little way back, which i reached without haste!. Been a shortass, it took a couple of failed attempts to mantel the boulders above and was with great relief to have collapsed amid the boulders at the foot of the final climb.
Arriving sometime later below the awesome flowstone cascade, i felt hysterically happy at having completed the all the difficultys, but also a sadness that i would shortly been returning to the world, knowing full well that in days to come my exultation would turn to meloncholy, my hunger greater than ever!. THE PREMATURE END!
Wish i coulda spent a little longer describing my experience but i'm at a friends house and my time is short.SEEYA

Did you go solo because you were wanting to do it that way??... or... could you not find any willing candidates to go with you?? it sounds like you had a fun day out!! How long did it take you??

Hey Neil!
My intention from the beginning was to solo it, it took around 5 1/2hours and yes! it was quite a profound experience, have become hooked on the idea of undertaking another serious solo trip.My time again is short, but its good to hear from you.
P.S Made it as far as Boreau falls chamber(Langcliffe pot) a month back with Mark dougherty(visitor of this site), far reaches trip planned for nearest future.

You're a glutten for punishment if you ask me!! What did you think of the passage in Langcliffe.... dark and gloomy?? Did you go in through Oddmire or via the original entrance and Craven Crawl?? Did you drop down to the head of Nemesis when you were in Boireau Falls Chamber??

Lots of questions and very interested in your exploits.

I found Langcliffe to be surprisingly pleasant and I'm sure Simon would agree. We went in the original entrance. Craven crawl was OK, even in a furry suit. Langstrothdale Chase is super. No, we didn't go through the first choke to the top of Nemesis. That had been the plan, but there is an awkward drop down at the start of the choke (assuming that we were in the right place, which I think we were). Nothing too desperate, but I still have a dodgy shoulder after a snowboarding injury and it's exactly that kind of movement which I still find awkward. Didn't seem worth risking it for not much more passage. Every time it is nearly better I keep straining it again!

The bottom half of the entrance pitch was pretty wet, even though it was a dry(ish) day. At the ledge halfway down it would be very advantageous to install a bolt for a deviation. This would enable a descent well away from the water.

Compared to many of the other caves in Yorkshire I found the rock to be much darker in nature. After you had been in there for over 20 hours (long exploratory trips to the end). It might just have been the fact that we were using carbides that didn't throw off much light. To compound this issue the walls didn't bounce much light back either.

Langstrothdale Chase is a nice piece of passage... a pleasure after getting tangled in the telephone wires in the Craven Crawl. I'd really suggest heading in via Oddmire in future... its pitches are dry.

The hole down to the streamway above Nemesis is awkward in nature. I found that the best way to attack it is feet first following the direction of the stream. It opens up quickly. If I remember rightly... the hole is found if you bare left (10 o'clock) as you enter the chamber.

When are you returning??

Well, since I live in Sweden I can't exactly just pop down when I feel like it! But I'm certainly going to go back with the intention of going to the bitter end.

BTW lots of people seem to have spent time down Langcliffe looking for a way on, but the big breakthrough seems to have eluded everybody. Yout two cent's worth on the prospects would be interesting to hear.

I can sympathise with you on that one... I'm visiting home in July and August and will be caving for a few days to get my fix. Aquamole, Henslers, Corkies, and Notts 2 have all been opened since I was last there.

I have my theories on the subject. I don't believe it will be through Langcliffe itself. Read the thread entitled Mossdale Caverns and navigate to the fourth page. The thread starts badly, but it gets a little more interesting as you get closer to the end.

Yours,
