Forced DNS change

Our club website hosts have just migrated to a new server over the weekend with a new IP address.
Today this is causing all sorts of DNS resolution problems.
Somewhere a DNS server has the old IP address value cached agaianst the domain name I guess.

Does anyone know if there is anyway to send out a message to nameservers that tells them to associate a domain name  with an IP address.

In other words how do I give the internet a kick to make it work again?

Any ideas?

It should sort itself in around 72 hrs or so  ;)

haha!
Thanks. 48 hours in and I am starting to get fed up. I can only do 'patience' for about a day or so.
Irritatingly it was working OK for me earlier today on the new server location but not for some of our other members. Also very concerned as to where all my email has gone!

Not a happy bunny!

DNS changes "propogate" across the internet from name server to name server. The name records are updated every few hours and nowadays local DNS servers should update quite quickly, ie. 2 to 4 hours. World wide can take up to 72 hours but usually quicker. If it hasn't sorted itself after 72 hours then you should contact your host.

The system is quite resilient and will normally sort itself out eventually.

Ok thanks. Previous experience suggests a day or so which is why I am surprised to be having problems this late.
But yes, the server is physically located in Houston Texas so it seems you are right about 72 hours.
Damned annoying though.

What's wrong with BCA's hosting service?  ;)

I wouldn't worry about not having email to a good number of the membership, who seem to be regulars here - just PM them. In fact, get everyone to sign up here and we can get rid of much of the club site, eh what?  ;)

I was about to start typing as you wrote that Peter! :)

Seriously though, I did look at the BCA hosting offer when Les first told me about it last year.
It was good but there was a reason I did not go over to it, I honestly can't recall what it was, but I think all in all that we get more 'freedom' at dataflame with mail services etc etc for a lower cost.

1Gb space
10 POP3 boxes
Unlimited mail forwarding accounts
Unlimited sub-domains
2 MySQL DBs
Perl
Control panel
SSI via .shtml
.htaccess support
All the the other usual features.

Can BCA hosting provide _ALL_ of the above features and if so for how much PA?

Also: Can BCA arrange domain registration and ideally hold our nameserver tags for us.
That woud be really useful if I could get the whole thing under one roof and for less than we pay at present.

I've had no problems all day - I saw your entry in the change log and relayed it to Howard. Seems he hadn't got your messages.

Ah - I sense a Peter wind-up! :)

This forum definitely has its uses - especially for almost real-time discusion and Q&A

But there are many features and services that only come with one's own domain and server - even if it is located in an office staffed by muppets!

I like the current dichotomy - it seems to suit you well too.

The whole thing is messy.
He rang me. He said you couldn't see him in the log, I tested the same thing earlier myself as I got his email about the problem. Couldn't see you either!!

I am concerned that our mebership is split between two copies of one site.

Also my mail volume has only been about 10% of expected average.

Annoyingly though the site was ok for me during the day. I even uploaded and could see the new timestamp in the page footer so was unconcerned - until it went out on me a few hours ago.

Bloody computers - will have to go an clean kit now...
...or tease Ditzy some more about moonmilk! :)

I like to use different words, it keeps the language alive.
I bet you're prestidigitating upon your keyboard now, my last three posts have coincided with yours.

Seem to be able to do most of the above stuff. And our servers are in the UK so the domain propogates much quicker  :tease:

I have just tried and failed to connect to the club site from home. As I could see your change log entry this morning, does that mean I was looking at the old or the new location ? It was about 11.30 I think. This is the second time we've had this nonsense in as many years, I believe.
