Gaining a consensus from the wider caving community

Mark - what specific issue did you think I was referring to, because in fact I was referring to nothing in particular, except perhaps local issues in general within my own club environment. However, if there is a hat to be worn, let's all try it on and see if it fits.....

No specific issue - I thought you were jesting that to get a consensus is to ask the people who you know will agree with you and claim that is democratic.  Then you suggested this was the reality of what I meant by the phrase that Cap n Chris put in the thread title. or have i misunderstood you?

(The thread where I made the statement "gain consensus from wider caving community.." had developed into a debate about enlarging "classic squeezes". Capn Chris linked to it earlier.

The BCA constitution was changed a year or so ago to include email communications (see Sec 13.3 in constitution) so in theory it could engage in a broader debate / vote.  (I believe the details for the process are still being worked on.)  But I suspect even that process will still only attract a minority to participate.

Just came across this quote from the well-known Greek caver, Plato:

One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors.

Ah, but you have the luxury of being able to criticise those inferiors from the comfort of your armchair ;)

My armchair is in use only because my health still refuses to allow me to be more active.  :(

But I do not regard them as my inferiors. I still own the T-shirt even if I haven't worn it for a while. I might disagree with them, but that is not the same thing at all.

Graham (or Plato) was not criticising the "inferiors", merely pointing out what made them inferior.

I suspect that the "you" in JasonC's quote was not personal, implying that those who do involve themselves in politics are entitled to consider themselves "superior".

The can of worms is now open --- discuss:::::

I see Camoron has found God so he must be superior.
