Gaping Gill Photo Opportunity

Ian P has come up with an interesting idea for a photo opportunity at EuroSpelio.
I've spoken with Chunky and we both think this is worth taking further!
Here's what Ian has proposed.......

----

As there will no doubt be some very talented photographers at the Eurospeleo meet, what about trying to arrange a "photo shoot" of the main shaft / chamber which is a bit "different". The winch will be set up and I'm sure we could persuade a small winching team to help out "after hours".

I have absolutely no idea about good photography but potentially available would be :

The chair to stop and start as required. (Like the picture on the front of ACT ??)
(We have radios on the fell which work to the main chamber)
Dihedral will be rigged
Jib direct could possibly be rigged
There is mains power down into the main chamber (and lighting)
Hopefully some willing cavers to help.

A photo could then be produced to help raise funds for a worthy cause, and possibly provide some photos for Spanset for their kind donation ?

I am only a foot soldier and any agreement for this would have to go through the relevant GG sub committee at the CPC.

If permission was granted, I guess a slot would need timetabling for the winch and then somebody to coordinate a few photographers to come up some "plans" of a shot and what they would need from the club on the fell.

Just a thought and as I said I have absolutely no idea about photography, but what I have seen on UK caving there is some excellent talent out there and this would seem like an opportunity ??

----

What we need to take this forward is an idea for the shot!
Remember that the stream will have been diverted, so won't be cascading down the main shaft. This needs consideration in planning the shot.

If you have knowledge of Gaping Gill, please add your 2p for creating a 'wow' shot!
Thanks - Duncan

Having made a laser scan image of the chamber last year I offer a few considerations;

The apparatus of the winch meet is quite intrusive for photography.  The scaffold platform and cable affect the shaft itself.  In the chamber there are all the signs, lights and cables, not to mention an increased number of visitors even if you think you have the place to yourself.  We were surprised how much the electric cables move and rotate which could cause problems for long exposures.  Of course it can be done, you just need to take these things into consideration.  Cheers

What is the view like from Mousehole shaft or off the rebelay on Dihedral?  I also like the view from the slope up to West Chamber.

This is my preferred view, as seen from above the entry from South Passage

This was taken during the August 2015 winch meet, and might give those that haven't seen it in "winch mode" an idea of the kit down there...

I have never seen a top-down shot of GG. That may be an idea. I went down bar pot when i was there so im not familiar with the routes in the main chamber but perhaps a top-down from one side showing cavers on rope on some the other routes for scale as well as someone at the bottom? Since you mentioned the water wouod be diverted that seems a prime time to get a clear top down shot since spray wouldnt interfere so much.

Just had an interesting Idea, but not one that could not be done with the winch.

The photographers location would have to be on-rope where the diverted water goes (Dihedral?) to catch a descending caver on the main shaft with as much of a blend of chamber/shaft as possible.

I don't recall seeing anything like this, but no doubt the Dudley will be on it before I get the chance (or enough flash guns!)

Lol, nope we're happy to help set it up and lend some guns if you have a shot in mind  (y)
