Guscott Pot

A couple of digs one with Andy and another with Ralf. Both digs were the sort where you work hard getting nowhere. First dig with Andy 3 out of 4 of our 'special devices' did not work so could not demolish the boulders that were in the way. Second dig it was one of those take one precarious boulder out and three more take its place. But having said that scaffolding is in place now at last and we have a plan to get rid of all the mud using piped water so that it can be done while away from the dig. Still need another trip to enlarge the place and stabalise it then trip after that we should be able to push onwards.

Joe joined the team (welcome Joe) so we took him on quick tour - into Manchester streamway, entrance lid of Bax pot & Lesser stream pot, into Main chamber of Goyden pot, entrance lids of Church pot and Limley pot. Then we had a dig in Guscott. The dig is becoming a quagmire with all the mud so we fixed up a pipe to divert the surface stream (only a mere tiny trickle at present) onto the dig - next time it rains hopefuul it will wash away some of the mud. Took a few boulders out of the floor to reveal the scaffold poles placed when we were digging from underneath before it collapsed on Ralf! So now we are just above the furthest point we got to before. We are going to have to remove a chunk of the boulder on the right to make room likley to cause a slump in but we have no choice - which means a ratio of three to four digs to widen and make safe to one dig that moves forward is now typical. Slow going but we are encouraged to proceed by the sound of the stream sinking ahead of us. Diggers Ralf, Chris and Joe

Really good progress last night George and Chris joined Ralf and I. Presently after trying to follow the stream under the choke that makes the floor of the chamber we hit problems (Ralf nearly got his arm pinned) so tried digging down far side of chamber and that failed too. Now again we are following the stream but removing part of the choke altogether by creating a trench accross the chamber. This was only second dig and already amazing progress being made - at this pace we should be the other side of chamber with about 4 digs and then ready to push on to new ground at standing height in safety!!

Sorry to hijack the thread but CaveMaps shows a strategically interesting cave running E/W from the streambed near Lofthouse, the western end of which is about 500ft north of the downstream end of Low Eglins. What's the cave called and is there any information about it?

Last night we broke into 20m of passage  :D and partial blockage at the end means more to come plus dig in chocked stream going well.

This week Ralf and I pushed it further and found another 50m approx  :D :D finishes in small stand up chamber with way on being clean washed tube too small to follow. Possible dig on left would be tight and hard going so not going to bother for now but well satisfied with the find.
Mick did some solo work on the right for of the main inlet but a projection stopped progress although it could be seen to enlarge a bit beyond. So with a lump hammer there might be more passage to explore here as well.
Finally we prodded the stream choke and got the water to fall between boulders needs scaffing and slowly we move onwards and downwards.

Good stuff

Though I never understand why your reports aren't each accompanied by about 200 photos, like some others are.  ;)

Ralf squirming his way over the boulder at the breakthrough point. Just for you Graham ;-)

Any more news chaps.
I'm starting to get Nidderdale withdrawal issues.
:cautious:

Thanks for your interest  :) Having pushed the two inlets in Guscott and finding 100m of passage we have turned our attention to other things especially as the good weather is here at last  :D. So we are digging out a bedding at the end of Gargett Way in Church pot to push a way through into Goyden 2 bypassing the Turf pitch. The idea being to then use this to make frequent trips to work on getting a way through into Goyden 3. First dig was hard going removing solid floor but now the passage is higher with loose mud and rocks. This thursday we were looking forward to pushing on but both Ralf and I both by coincidence have bad backs so postponed  :(
