J.W.Puttrell

There is a book ...

Page 5 "Jim joined the cutlery department of Mappin & Webb in Sheffield."

Page 9 "Jim persuaded a young silversmith colleague from Mappin & Webb to join him on the crags."

Page 47 "For 18 years Jim had worked at Mappin & Webb in Sheffield rising to the position of manager of the cutlery and electroplate department. On leaving the company..."

page 46 "James Puttrell [Jim's father] instigated the formation of a new company, James Puttrell & Sons Ltd ..... seven subscribers ....[includes] Jim ..." [The dawn of the new century]

page 3 "James formed a partnership .... devoted to the superintending of painting, gilding and decorating." [March 1878]

So looks like he had several "jobs".

Might be more in the book?

J Puttrell (and sons) had their business just off The Moor, in Sheffield city centre, as far as I know. He and his mates were probably quite well-off, as both Puttrell and WM Sissons lived in Broomhall, a rather posh district in those days. I think Sissons lived on Wilkinson Street and Puttrell in Hanover Square. Both streets now are habituated more by students, but the houses are still there, and in excellent condition.

There's a collection of all Puttrell's scrapbooks and newspaper articles on microfilm in Sheffield Local Studies library - I've read through most of it, and it's a treasure-trove of information.

Vaguely remember a family member working for Sissons somewhere in the Hope Valley area, in the 60's....They made stainless steel sinks I think.

Thanks for that. I thought he was connected with silver ware but then came across the painter and decorator bit. I'm wondering if that was a mistake in the text -or was there another J Putrell?
I'd love to read the book but it seems to have been published by one of the self publishing companies and I can't find any copies.
The tip about Sheffield Local Studies library could be very helpful.
Thanks again everyone :)
