Wapping is well worth a visit - easy but fascinating.

Ironically, John Barnatt (with additional contributions from Dave Webb and Geoff Peppit) has just authored a paper for the latest Cave and Karst Science on graffiti in caves and mines, and which features not only Victorian showcave visitor graffiti in Cumberland Cavern, but also the notorious Troggs biker graffiti, which literally covered the entire chambers to a point where it 'almost' became modern art. The article goes into some discussion about what graffiti should or shouldn't be removed. I took some photos of it for the piece, along with Lisa W and Mat and Niki A-S. The article also covers most of the miners and visitor graffiti in Speedwell. A free PDF version can be downloaded (along with an additional online supplement of extra images) for non-subscribers here - note that a temporary login must be requested for the download :

It may be a spur of the moment job depending on when I get chance, but the survey is available through the DCA website if you ever get the urge to visit.

Following the arrows would be a bit difficult now, though you could try to spot the places where they've been scrubbed off! Most of them got dealt with last night by an ATAC clean-up squad, a few in the maze may have  escaped but they can be hunted down at a later date....

Sorry, I'd missed the posts about the latest crop of arrows.

The ones I previously scrubbed from Jugholes were not just at crucial points marking the way out, but seemed to be marking a circuit. It gave me the impression that someone had marked a route that could be followed unsupervised. I would be interested whether this was the case in Wapping. It could be a 'cowboy/unqualified' cave leader.

One day hopefully someone will catch the perpertrator and name them on here.

There seemed to be several different sets in Wapping & Cumberland, the most recent was in fluorescent green, as was the new graffiti at the entrance. There were also some in pale green, white, and in a few places silver over yellow. Wapping isn't on PICA's inspected sites AFAIK (can an instructor confirm that?) so there shouldn't be instructed groups taken in at all, if someone has been doing this then they're a complete cowboy!

Correct, Wapping is not included in the PICA inspection scheme and no LCMLA members should be operating there.
Voluntary organisations like the Scouts do not require this inspection IIRC. Not that I'm suggesting that particular group is responsible at all.

We spotted several green and blue arrows in devonshire cavern yesterday, dunno if they've been there a while...

I found the empty spray cans somewhere in the lower section and meant to come abck to pick them up, but the nature of Devonshire cavern being as it is I couldnt find them again on my way back out. I'll go back for then

I dealt with a load of fluorescent green and pink spray in the upper end a few years back when we were having the problems with the door closing, I had a brief foray down-dip on the main route last year but don't recall seeing any then. Might have to see if the ATAC fancies doing Devonshire for its next outing....
