Leck Fell Road

Just back from Ingleton/Ribblehead. There's only a sprinkling of snow today but there's minor drifting. LFR should be OK but no guarantees.

Any other reports on the Leck Fell road since Kay's response? Is it accessible to non-four wheel drive without tread on the tyres?

It was easy to get to Leck on sunday but since then we have had a day of micro snow which eventually settled on the minor roads. I've not been up the fells since sunday but have been around Ingleton and Bentham. It was a bit slushy during the day and squashed flat by vehicules.  By ten last night it had frozen solid and was quite a skating rink on ungritted roads.  Today (tuesday) the sun has come out and the ice on the roads has thawed where it is in the sun.  The road to Leck sometimes gets gritted, presumedly by Alan Middleton of Leck Fell House.  I'd certainly give it a try and just watch out for ice in the shadows.

The western part of the Dales has had very little snow compared to other parts of the country.  Well worth visiting if you want to get some caving done.

The road to Bull Pot Farm, however, was blocked by a deep drift on Sunday (near Gale Garth Farm).

Was on PenyGhent on Sunday and I'd generally agree with this - BUT as always in winter, be aware that Snowmelt from a sudden thaw like today could rapidly rise streams! It all goes into the caves because the subsurface is still frozen.

Thank you - I never realised. I wondered where it went.

Langcliffe, I don't expect the information was aimed at you! There's plenty of novice cavers read this forum, and if that's given one of them something to think about, it was worth posting.
