Looking for a club

Went to meet the people from BDCC last night.. nice bunch. Apparently it was a quite night; there were only five there including me.. maybe I scared the others away? Who knows...

I hit on the problem I have in my original post though - and I reckon its one I'm going to come across a lot: Most people only go UG at weekends. So while not saying I wont try to go with the BDCC I'll keep looking awhile and see if another matches what I'm looking for more closely.

Mendip is quite active mid-weeks, as, I suspect, most caving regions are. I prefer caving mid-week as the popular caves tend to be considerably quiter - even deserted - way more fun!

Whilst BDCC are a splendid bunch, their location dictates that most of their caving will be w/ends. Not all though. Perhaps you should consider joining a club that's based in one of the caving regions, so you also have the option of accomadation and local experience if required (I believe LesW has already made this offer - remember though, the Wessex is now non-smoking!!!)
Have a look round and try a few.

I should be seeing Les next weekend - I've got a pressie for him! As for smoking (trying really hard not to be argumentative - see other thread!!) I am trying to give up so thats not really an issue. I'll talk to him (and others) then.

opps - seeing Les weekend after next - wishing my life away for a minute there...

Walrus, here's a quick Mendip summary which might be helpful to you

Name                        Shamefully Luxurious* Hut, on Mendip?
Axbridge Caving Group                      No
Bristol Exploration Club                    Yes
Cerberus Speleological Society          Yes
Cheddar Caving Club                          No
Frome Caving Group                        Dunno
Mendip Caving Group                        Yes
Mendip Nature Research Committee    Yes
Shepton Mallet Caving Club                Yes
Wealden Cave & Mining Society          Yes
Wessex Cave Club                            Yes

The Wessex has the greatest number of members**. Some of these clubs regularly go caving overseas; most regularly cave off-Mendip; some are novice friendly and have regular trips for newcomers, some don't; some mostly do digging.

* Debatable.
** More than five!

Now historically there were other club huts and one  very historical hut
(with outside dunny) still exists on't top of Mendip
A first World War Hut inhabited by clever university types, I am told, though never been asked inside, unedumacated you see.

I haven't listed UBSS since, as a University club, they aren't a club that general riff-raff can approach with a grubby handful of coins and insist on joining.

But then they'd no longer be grubby riff-raff, they'd just be grubby.

Just incase there are any Welshmen out there or New Zealanders on this forum, when Mister Walrus talked about "Sheep Stories"
I can assure you it was nothing of a sexual nature
