Map of caving huts in the UK

FFS, every single one of the listed clubs has their hut's location available on the internet already. All but one have the location available on their own website, the sole exception being the Orpheus (the address of which is available via Google Maps and a number of address aggregation sites). Some of the locations are listed by address, some by a Google Maps/Streetmap/etc link, some by grid reference and others by hand drawn locality maps. Unless there happens to be someone out there with a fetish for old ropes, boiler suits and broken sofas I really don't think putting it all together is going to help anyone who isn't a caver.

Frankly having stuff in one viewer is great in my opinion. If the relevant communities hosting registries etc could get together and add an overlay for caves over 100m (with appropriate credit to the registries) then this would become an even more useful resource. Caver friendly pubs has also been suggested as a useful overlay.

Just imagine...

Hmm, I fancy doing Such-and-Such Cave - I wonder if there's a hut nearby? Oh I know I'll have a look at this really useful map rather than trawl through umpteen links and have to check where each one is individually. Oh look, this one is only a little way from SaSC. Oh and it has a drying room. And there's a pub in walking distance. Y'know what I think I'll see if they've got any space.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling PCM!

Spike has a great idea there. If anyone from registries is interested in doing this please get in touch and we can have a chat about what's possible.

PS: Thanks for sending in the code fix Spike.

An online/app guide for regions is way overdue; PCM is a techie genius; if anyone can, the paperclipmonkey can.

Why stop there, why not combine it with the other map with all the cave entrances on it. (Or would that make it too busy?)

maybe not all cave entrances, but main points of interest.

I think the nearest breakfast/ pub ideas are good calls.

MCRA allow access through an API, with some conditions, something like must credit and link back to mcra site. Not sure anyone has used it as yet though.

I was discussing this with one of the MCRA registrars last night, provisionally seems ok, watch this space...

Thanks to contributors spending hours over christmas there's a new version of the map with updated information.
Notable changes:
  • Added BMC huts
  • Added CPC hut - guests can stay there!
  • Links through to Google Maps to get directions

The map is still available here:
http://paperclipmonkey.github.io/UK-Caving-Hut-Map/

and if anyone fancies editing or using the data in absolutely any way they want to it's all available as a spreadsheet here:
https://github.com/paperclipmonkey/UK-Caving-Hut-Map/blob/master/data/huts.csv

It's there, just not quite in the right place. I believe the location came from the grid ref on your website which is wrong, and places you on the road north of the pub. I've made the change, and it should update shortly...
