Masongill Lane Flood Damage

A cloudburst last night has had a dramatic effect on the road approaching Ireby Fell. The Turbery Road has completely washed out and left the lane looking like a river bed. I managed to get up in my pick-up ,but great care is needed with vehicles with less ground clearance. The edge of the road has been undermined in places. I hope nobody was caught underground during this flood event.

Got out of Marble Steps at about 3.30, just as the rain started. No other vehicles about so hopefully no one underground.
The state of the road has been getting worse with debris building up across the road in several places but was not aware of any undermining of the road sides.
Sounds a bit bad . Who's responsable for repairs and maintainance?

A local from Masongill said that the road is a highway as far as the fell gate- so county council responsability I assume.
You would not believe it used to be a surfaced road. I doubt that the CRO landrover could get up without some temporary filling in the deepest holes.
Perhaps a recce would be worthwhile if any CRO people are following this.

Can help with supply of filling materials  ;)

The local Highway Authority (i.e. the County Council) need to be informed before they can do anything about it.

I recently advised Cambridgeshire County Council of a similar situation on a Byway (i.e. unsurfaced highway), and they very quickly repaired the damage.

if masongill road is impassable what is the rights of access / road conditions approaching it from kingsdale ?

ie - via westgate lane [ past the cellphone mast ] to towscar road - leading direct to the parking spot adjacent to the water works

marble-steps and other caves up there are on my too do list

just dont fancy hiking huge distances up masongill lane - if i can legally and safely get to the parking spot another route

Unless a restriction has been placed on it then you can drive it (probably 4x4 can't recall condition as I was a passenger and it was a fair few years back)

Just drove up the lane on the way back from the Dales; no problem in getting to the water-treatment place (or whatever it is) in a bog-standard van, but a posh, low-slung car might struggle. (Unless it's a company car ;) ;))

My concern was the upper section beyond the water board building,  in the case of a 'Call Out' to West Kingsdale.
It would be interesting to hear of any notable changes to active cave sediments after such a severe downpour on Ireby Fell area.

Drove up to the stile for Ireby two weeks ago and managed it in two wheel drive, did it this Saturday 23rd and had to use four wheel drive low ratio. Certainly getting a lot worse
