I would go for The Forest of Dean / Wye Valley
it is a lovely location and within an easy drive of Mendip, Wales & Derbyshire,
as well of cousre the fine caves of the Forest, also the locals are mad keen on digging

I too would go for the Forest. Been working around the area for quite some time now and it's beautiful. As you quite rightly point out, it's very close to all the major areas except Yorkshire. Not a lot of facilities compared to your average English village let alone Washington! You will probably have to drive for 30 minutes to buy a pint of milk. I've been told the people there have six fingers on each hand.  ;)

no les youre right my dads side of me familie comes from the forest and he has (slightly) webbed feet. not sure about the maried to there sisters living in trailer parks bit thogh ;).
and the only reaon theyre all diging mad is because anyone from the forest whos worked the pits for a year and a days legaly alowed to free mine so a fair number a making a few quid on the side mineing and its a beutiful area because the miners nicked all the maps of where the mines lay when the ncb shut the mines down so property developers cant build any houses without asking the locals first otherwise the houses have a habit of disapearing into the gorund!!

Obviously the Peak District, equadistant(ish) from Yorkshire, S.Wales and Mendips also with caves on the doorstep....

...plus the biggest chamber in the UK in easy reach  ;)

Question is what sort of work you do? and what is the budget for a house...? Flippin expensive at the moment...

Hi, everybody.
THX for all the answers.
I have pretty odd job, I am US certified swimming pool repairman, well, that includes among others plumbing and electrical, so to find a job is not a big problem (I hope!) Budget for housing: 0GBP, renting only. Yorkshire looks good, will I have to learn Tyke?
Well, didn't decide anything yet, so, if you want good caving buddy, please keep posting  :p

S'gotta be Spain then. Only three people in the UK have swimming pools - and none of them are in Yorkshire.

Electrical work could be problematic for you now. Check out the latest legislation on "part P" of the UK building regulations. This may restrict your job prospects in this direction (although it might not be an issue, just giving you a heads up  (y) ).

Well, I don't expect to be big boss smoking cigars right away. I don't mind digging wires at the beginning. Thanks for info , will check that.

Hmm, unless I'm very much mistaken, pool repair in the Uk would only be slightly more usefull than a Catholic priest in Afganistan!
Only a guess but there's perhaps one pool per 20000 people at best?
If it's a growth market, I bet it's bloody slow, given our climate & economy.

I checked into moving to the UK and its almost impossible.
As far as I know and have been informed you have to have 25,000 annual income (without taxes and proven through a bank and deposited in a UK bank) or a company who will offer you a job and complete the neverending paperwork for you. Your permission to stay in the UK is connected with this temp working permit, and if you are jobless after a while....guess what happens to your permit? ) unless you are a UK citizen?
Doesn't the person who wants to work for himself have to have a UK license?
Anybody know any other way other than taking a rowboat and sneaking in under the cover of darkness?

The UK is very much in the EU being the largest contributor per capita and the second largest condributor by amount, to the cost of the EU.

What we haven't done is joined the Euro currency or held a referendum on the EU constitution (as there isn't one  :-\ )

All citizens of EU countries have the right to travel live and work in any EU country so it's a bit like a United States of Europe (although the euro sceptics won't like to admit to that)

We don't have a central government but the European Commision makes "Directives" which once passed are required to be enshrined into each member nations legislative and legal systems.

Nah, all you need is 9 kids, a criminal record and a flaky reason for claiming asylum.

The above was the cynical side of me talking. Seriously, how do you go about emigrating to the uk? I'm interested because some friends of mine are in the process of emigrating to Canada and they've been put in touch with a 'buddy' family over there who are going to be helping them through the system and will advise them on how to get their kids in school, how to find a doctor/dentist etc. I wondered if the uk has the same sort of thing or if we could learn something from the canadians.

I have no idea. After hearing that with the permit and/or the 25000 pounds, the wind pretty much out of my sails. I'm getting pretty old to start again at the bottom.
America/Germany could take a slice of cake from the Canadians.
Could it be that a company whom the people are working for is helping your friends?
