Vaguely.  She tried all the things suggested, except ditching Norton.  I think we are stuck with this.  Now my computer is running slow, but I can live with that.  I just read the Mail while it it loading.  Many thanks for all the suggestions.

As an IT bod working in schools, do the following:

(i) Get rid of Norton, it gungs up the system and causes virtually every PC to run slow. Install AVG (free) instead. Much Better.

(ii)Ramp up your virtual memory. Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->System-->Advanced tab-->Performance-->Advanced tab-->Virtual Memory-->Change custom size to minimum of 2048 and max of 4096. Click apply/OK and it'll ask you to restart. Close all dialogue boxes and restart.

(iii)Defrag. A must if system is running slow. My Computer and right click disk. Tools, and defrag. Analyse first, then defrag.

(iv)Buy extra memory - notebook or desktop memory is still relatively cheap. If its 256mb, buy 512mb, if its 512mb, buy 1gb.

Might have found the reason.  Wife has gone to Leeds for the day [don't ask] and her computer is turned off.  So there is only one computer [mine] using the router.  Mine is now back up to speed.  Well almost.  One other thought.  The broad band is very slow at the end of the valley [Cwmparc].  Perhaps I need to replace all those copper cables with fibre optic right back to the exchnage in Treorchy?

Or your wifes computer is laden with malware which is using her processor and internet bandwidth......

Nah, can't be, Norton wouldn't allow that ...

He would - he's too busy reading the Daily Mail to check for dodgy software....

Chris.

Rather drastic but if you want to truly want to sort it...

Just go to command prompt and type format C:\ I promise the PC will run much faster after doing this  ;)

Of course all your data will be wiped (including windows) (so back up all your docs first and files you need first)  but hey at least it will run quickly once you install XP back on and only the software you NEED.

Computers like toilets need a good cleaning every now and again just don't put any soapy water in there computers don't tend to like that ;)

My wife has spent all morning trying to un-install Norton without success.  The air is blue and I am afraid to open my mouth.  Any ideas?

Aye. Back up all your/her data. Wipe the HDD and reinstall everything.

Yes, leave her to it and go for a pint.

Best advice so far.  Pub is just across the road.  I might move in for a few days.

Not sure if Norton works like this (never used it)... but the program/service prob starts on 'startup' so...

Start--> Run --> Type: "msconfig"  --> Find startup and remove almost every Tick (which makes your computer start quicker and removes background programs running) apart from programs you deem critical. MS Office and the such..

This may solve the "can't uninstall" problem... perhaps!

Update: ..actually looking back Sam already suggested this  :-[

Safe-mode --> uninstall might be worth a try. There are less processes running in safe-mode, that might be messing things up.

To get into safe-mode hit F8 during boot.

Dowload AVG antivirus (free edition) and Microsoft's Windows Defender.

Have downloaded AVG.  Worked for a couple of months and then it let in a virus Win32.nugel.E
which I cannot get rid of.  Any ideas?
