It’s been a busy 18 months since the last newsletter, so this is another 8-pager, with stories spanning all aspects of northern caving.
Many of you will have seen the stories reported elsewhere; Our official newsletters are now less about delivering news as-it-happens, particularly these days with social media (including this excellent forum) and our mailing list, but more about periodically bringing it all together in one place to properly showcase the work being done and ensure it is forever recorded.
We’ve seen some excellent conservation initiatives, undertaken by CNCC volunteers and other enthusiasts, and lots of work to keep our potholes safe and accessible. This ranges from dealing with various tree-related perils, to stiles at Alum Pot, restoring a collapsed shakehole at Great Douk, and reopening access to caves lost due to collapses. Many thanks to all involved for either working on CNCC’s behalf or choosing us to help share your efforts with the community.
Our headline news on access has been successes at removing Birks Fell Cave from all access restrictions, although this is sadly countered by the ongoing issues at High Birkwith.
Our anchor team have been busy, partly thanks partly to new potholes being discovered faster than we can anchor them, including Mayday Hole, F'ing Hopeless Pot, Curtain Pot and others. We have topos for these, and descriptions for most on our website. We’ve also added descriptions for several other less-well visited non-SRT caves to provide greater inspiration for days out underground.
We report on some great initiatives to promote and raise awareness of northern caving amongst the public and government bodies alike, as well as the continued success of our training workshops following the recent launch of our winter 2022-2023 program.
Paper copies of this newsletter will be dispatched over the coming days to all club huts and other venues; We would really appreciate these being made available for people to view.
