i am rather impressed with the pda access to ukcaving, a simple fast functional access. works a treat with my new palm tungston TX wireless pda. :)

Is it cave-proof? i.e. shock-proof, mud-proof, water-proof, drop-proof? Does it cost less than a pint of Butcombe (standard unit of currency, beyond which everything is blanket-classed as "wildly expensive")? Do you need to be able to read or write to use it? Are the batteries rechargeable? Is it manufactured by Oldham?

It works pretty well on my old K750i on GPRS too - and that didn't cost me a penny!  :tease:

No, No, No, No, No, No, Yes, Yes, No.
But I can access remotely (if a wireless network is reachable) or store locally on it rigging guides, surveys, maps, pictures of entrances, descriptions, phone numbers etc for when I am 'in the field'. When I dont want to carry my laptop or leave it in the car while caving, mine exploring or exploding gates.

It was slightly expensive but then I am a geek who likes technology toys, I would like to see a pda built by Oldham!

If you stick it in a waterproof case then yes yes yes yes no  no yes no. Mines survived a few trips underground. Mainly cos it's too expensive to leave in the car. But it's also an extra spare
light source and could keep you entertained whilst waiting to be resued. They don't like being
dropped in streams though I've lost two like that.

The PDA part would be functional but nothing fancy...
...but boy would the battery weigh a ton on 'yer waist band (standard 16Ah offering I suspect) :)

Handy for surveys I guess (rather then sport caving). Does any survey software exist for pdas? The survey may include descriptions of points of interest and it would be a pain (and inject errors) to have to transfer from wet paper to pc. I may start looking for a tough cover for my new little toy.

Aha! But Oldham do make pdas. Here's one!....

The Oldham Mark Seven, Handheld Ready-Reckoner[/colour]
"It's a slide rule, a diary and a protractor, all-in-one!"

Celebrity endorsement "It makes my life carefree and joyous...."

:clap2: @ Oldham 'PDA' - the words pda in no way was ment to convay the idea of 'portability'.

As for our Celebrity endorsement - Mick McNamara - "It's in the darkness I see the boys face..." - was that quote right, more like "It makes my life carefull and joyless...."

I'v just installed something that gives c**tplaces the same functions but not as pritty as the ukcaving pda access.

That's much too recent technology for something built by Oldham it doesn't look like it's got valves in it for a start not to mention Williams Tubes.

As an aside when I was at school the school computers used valves and relays and were analogue output was by burning paper using a high voltage spark. The pupils maintained them cos they were too modern for the staff to cope with. Can you imagine what health and safety would say to that these days?

Go on take your PDA in the Hunters and watch Roger smack a 6" nail through it ............

Stu.

Well it looked like phone

Just been and looked at that site and noticed the software will run on a Palm Vx... it just so happens I have a couple of Palm Vx's kicking around in a box - they are just gathering dust as they are so old I considered them obsolete (but they work so I cant throw them away - explains why I have mountains of computer stuff ). So if anyone can has a legitimate use for one (like surveying, not just to play with) I'll part with it in exchange for a beer or two!

I have been looking at buying an old palm for exactly that purpose off ebay. I'll swap you a couple of beers for one if you want.  :beer2: :beer2:
