Hi,

I have been asked organise a small display of bone artifacts found in Bones Hole, Cheddar Gorge, and Hunters Lodge Inn Sink for Wells Museum for the UKs Festival of Archaeology (18th July to 2nd August).  As I have catalogued all the bones I know which I will be showcasing, however, I need to create some eye catching and informative display boards.

Therefore do you have, or know anyone who might have, good quality pictures of the bone slopes in either cave?  Failing that pictures of Bone Hole cave entrance would be useful.  To be honest practially any photographic material might prove usefull especially any nice picture of the inside of the caves.

If you are happy for your pictures to be used you would be credited with having taken them.  Scanned copies would be put on display of any precious ones.

Therefore if you have anything that might be useful to me or would like to get involved please email me on

Hi,

Sorry for not reading your message easlier.  The display went very well and is still up in the museum.  I didn't manage to get down Bone Hole as the entrance is being stablised and access is currently denied by MCG until they fix it which is understandable.  I did go down HLIS though.  I did get sent some lovely pictures and these have been credited on the display.

I will be putting a write up of the display in the Belfry Bulletin and perhaps send something to Rich Whitcombe for Descent.  It was fun to do and i'm keen to get involved with more for the museum.

many thanks,
Hannah

If Bone Hole is in need of stabilisation work p'raps W/L can nudge the MCG Conservation/Access Officer for up-to-date gen on the state of play and report back here to let us know how things are going.

I think "denied" is a little harsh. We would never deny anyone a visit. Esp. b_c

Nice try! But WL is not the C&A officer now.

Work is ongoing, and nearly complete.  The unstable entrance shaft is now scaffolded and the archaeology of the Bone Slope protected with a raised walkway.  The old chain used as a handline on the entrance shaft has been removed as it was dangerous, and fixed ladder installed to ensure that the loose stuff is not disturbed (it also makes descent much easier).  All of this is thanks to Biff for supply of the large amount of materials.

I would be interested in a trip into Bone Hole too. Seen the entrance a few times over the last 40 odd years but never been down.
