Pitch Rope Lengths in the Dales

I can see what mikem is getting at, and it's what I meant above when I said about the combinations needed to do a cave being important.

Perhaps it would be slightly better phrased to say, "the maximum number of each length required for any single route down a cave"? I think it's certainly of use.

That certainly makes sense, although I dread to think how many possible ways there are down Notts Pot!

Unfortunately, it would require a different data structure, and I suspect that it would be difficult to have the same data structure serve both functions without resulting in over-complexity of both the data format and the data processing transaction. The most straightforward way of doing it would be to have a second data file for the routes, and allow the transaction to combine the information from the two files. That would, of course, result in a lot of data being duplicated.

It would be an interesting project for someone with the inclination.

From the data I have (not the same as yours) and using the program I mentioned above, I get the results below. Obviously it's totally inflexible in terms of using longer ropes for shorter pitches, or splitting longer ropes where possible.
