Possible Stolen Gear

I think everyone is right to condemn this sort of behaviour as the details become more clear.  It sounds to me like this was an opportunist theft where the thief might have been tempted by the value of that much shiny gear.  I doubt this was planned otherwise the perpetrators wouldn't choose a Sunday afternoon when there were more cavers about than almost any other time of the day, week or year.  It does also seem likely from the above posts that the thieves were disturbed mid crime.  It could be possible that they hid or dumped the booty on the way out - not wishing to get caught on Kingsdale lane.  Has anyone looked up the inlets for example?

I heard it said elsewhere that this might be some sort of vendetta or sabotage against the Eurospeleo event.  Apart from being paranoid there is nothing to support this and it was CRO gear after all said and done.  Thefts like this do happen from time to time but fortunately are rare.  The evidence may suggest that these were cavers, and there are bad apples in all walks of life, but lets remember that there are far more good cavers out there doing extraordinary things, helping people and communities, such as the CRO.  Let's not allow these rare bad events to colour our enjoyment of the caves or taint our fun at events like Eurospeleo.

May the Darklord have mercy on their souls..

I was one of the 6 with Jeff, we left at 1.30pm and they were intact then. We left about 2pm, there were a lot of cars, but I didn't see any cavers.

I was with Nick Bennett on Sunday this was only my 2nd day caving I'm just glad they didn't pinch the ladders. Not a good introduction. I'm a climber/mountaineer and just assumed caving had very similar (honest) people. I just hope these few guys were in the minority. Pinching gear is bad enough but it strikes me that this theft could put people in danger including myself.
Rant over lets hope my next caving trip is less controversial.

If it's any consolation, I've never had anything go missing, but have had a few bits of kit lifted from crags. I think the vast majority of people who enjoy outdoor (and underground) activities are decent, although this is disgraceful.

Welcome to caving, Trish -and welcome to the forum  :)

What's happened is fortunately very rare - take a look at the 'Lost & Found' thread where folks try hard to return kit they've found to their fellow caver.  Caving does have similar honest people - these thieves are fortunately the exception rather than the rule.

Hi Pegasus thanks for the welcome.
Yes I guessed caving was like minded people and it was just a minority of bad apples. I think I was just unfortunate to experience it on my 2nd outing.
It's certainly not put me off and I'm looking forward to my next outing.

The missing krabs will be replaced before the weekend with Maillons kindly donated by heightec ltd www.heightec.com .    No need to pass the bucket round now ? unless you all fancy making a donation to CRO for all their good work of course!  ;)

In my experience there are probably the same number of bad apples in every hobby. I can remember on another forum someone expressing shock that a motorcyclist could have stolen something from a fellow motorcyclist.

Hi I do realize that, I think I was just more shocked they pinched safety gear more than the act of general stealing

I have heard of people nicking the krabs from top-rope anchors at crags (hopefully non-climbers), and people tying straight into wires to avoid this.

Some of the posts don't seem to realise that the CRO traverse rope has Karabiners for speed of access with knots in place, maillons and threadlock are the last thing I'd want them to use when going to rescue someone, it would be very slow and near permanent. We need to try and catch the thief/ves and take them to the police if possible as they might be able to be charged with attempted manslughter, certainly if the cave were to have flooded.

Well Monday is a NCC pensioners caving day so who were all those buggers on Leck Fell today?

Badlad as me down as an old git, certainly a git but they eyes still work.

How many on the Fell spotted the guy with Yellow paint on a Krab ?

CRO types, PM me if you feel its relevant.

Oh and in passing how many spotted today's Eurobash deliberate mistake? Gavel and Pot come into it somewhere.
