So, let me get this right. In the first post of this thread, Mr Badlad said:

But not here apparently ? not even a fence, right on the edge of a slippery 98m drop.

And yet there are posts, from Simon Wilson, braveduck, Blakethwaite and Pitlamp discussing the extant fence and who put it in place.

I'm confused  :-\

I have a feeling It was the Bradford pothole club ,I was there !

The existing steps were definitely constructed by the CPC. I was there. It's in a publication somewhere. Next time you go past IC ask PJ as I'm pretty sure he was involved, along with someone called TT.

try http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-york-north-yorkshire-22607903 which shows some of the fence posts at the moor top level around about half to two thirds of the shake hole.  The edge of the 98m drop is at the base of this depression; as I recall the total depth from moor top to shaft bottom (floor of main chamber) is
110m.  (No doubt some one will produce the correct values from the 3D survey done by MDL and apologies to KD for not being able to do so.)  The BPC web site provides more photographic detail at http://www.bpc-cave.org.uk/gaping_gill_setup.htm.

There's also an image here entitled Looking into Gaping Gill dated Sep 2013 showing a fence at the top of the depression.

Is it just me or does a fair portion of this thread sum up the kind of drivel that makes UKC so unpalatable to a fair portion of cavers?

I sympathize with lazarus and braveduck ? yes, there's a load of crap on this forum, but there's also useful information out there . . . . . don't throw the baby out with the bath-water.

Bit off topic, but this thread reminds me of the going ons currently hopping in Bath, basically 5 people, all drunk, have fallen in the river Avon and drowned, in five years, now safety groups are calling for it to be fenced off?! Madness.

and how far should we go to protect idiots from themselves, and if this lowered the quality of life for the rest of us, would we actually feel good from the politically correct feeling of self sacrifice.

Once you start going down that road, how high and solid do your fences have to be to be deemed adequate to protect suicidal idiots from themselves?

Do we really need something like this all the way round Gaping Gill?

Same thing happens in York, generally with students.

It would be better (& preferable!) were they to fence the students in...
