I have a secret site, I might be willing to reveal its location, as long as any potential visitors take a spade/bar/other-removal-tools - once you get through to caverns measureless let me know, ta!  ;)

As for the OP, makes a fair comment. If people stumble across a site or try and search for information on a site and find no official information it's quite possible they'll just "take a look".

One thing I've started doing to avoid any 'misunderstandings' in new sites, or new sections of sites, is to leave a laminated notice at the dig areas, saying what's going on, and who's doing it. Also asking that if anyone wants to use any in-situ rigging to first contact me or the other main team members to check on its provenance. Granted that means if they do ask us, it will mean at minimum a trip back to surface to ring us up, but I think that's fair enough, given it's totally unknown rigging, which I can guarantee isn't always textbook. But it doesn't say don't explore. And if you've already asked us, do what you like. If there are further digs beyond, there are more notices.

In one case, there are delicate sediments and mine workings that need protection, and also very unstable sections, so there's an extra bit on the notice to warn of that, and again, to contact us before poking anything! But at least it's clear what's happening and why. But projects cost a lot of personal time and often a fair bit of cash too (including a laminator!), so I don't mind keeping it quiet on the internet until it's truly ready for any eventual outcome that may result from doing that.
