Have to admit that one on its nice little base looked very much like a lot I've seen on sale in China, where 'interesting stones' are quite a collector's item.

"Dear sir,

this rock formation is part of an old collection of rocks left to me by a relative, who was passionate about rocks and collected them on his world travels whilst in the merchant navy this one was marked as burma 1948. I have never seen items like this available anywhere niether has anyone i have asked, if it was an obvious problem and the internet and ebay where full of them then i would agree with you, as it is evedently not, i do not see the harm of this item, especially as it is old and not from private or protected modern day sites. But a chance for some to own such an old, facinating rock, i have no local museums or institutes.

I respect and now understand your concerns and thankyou for making me aware of your concerns.

Yours sincerly.-"

Gus, I hope you don't mind but I took the liberty of alluding to you in a response sent to the vendor (copy below); his Ebay shop does not contain any other items which could possibly fit the "old collection of rocks left to me by a relative" and on checking Chinese rock merchants' sites, the base does indeed look remarkably similar to brand new stuff - also, the stal is no way from 1948 - it looks too new. No, I think we're being given the run-around. I think it's worth pursuing. Watch this space....

"Your response was appreciated but our Chinese caving representative has seen the photographs of your item for sale and the base on which the item is displayed is remarkably similar to modern pieces available from unscrupulous dealers. If the item is inherited then it is no loss to you financially if it is given away; Staffordshire Museum service and the North Staffordshire Geological Society would, I am sure, be happy to receive the item. Where are the other items you inherited being listed on Ebay?"

Well done cap'n Chris' I also thought that the vendors excuse that he had no local museums or institutes very weak. The auction finishes tonight.

Response:

I put this onto a marble base myself, I make marble sculpture. If your intention is not to believe any of it i can help you no further.

I'm happy this person is genuine so it just remains to see how much lucre they secure from this sale. I did think of emailing the potential purchasers but frankly can't be bothered. Shame on me.

Never mind the credit - protect the stal!

It makes my heart bleed when I see a row of stumps where formations used to be...
