Ubley Warren Pot

Does anyone know what the situation with access is to Ubley Warren Pot?

Mendip Underground is out of date as it says access is fine, but we found the cave to be padlocked. Where can I get a key from or is it a CSCC key? There was a lot of moss growing over one of the entrance covers suggesting it has not been visited for some time...

I rent some buildings at Ubley Warren. Next time I'm up there (this week) I'll try my CSCC key and let you know if it works.

If you want to try Ubley Hill Pot take a shovel & lifeline, it's still blocked 30ft down the shaft.

Is Ubley Hill Pot the same as Ubley Warren Pot? I seem to remember several caves with 'Ubley' in. If so, how blocked?

I'll take a CSCC key and try that next time I'm there, unless Burt says otherwise. Thanks

Not certain it is still a CSCC key. The ownership changed and the info on the CSCC website is wrong. I am in the process of trying to get up to date info.

Can somebody let me know if it is a CSCC key (It might be the old one).

I presume Nettle is going to be the same.

Perhaps the CSCC key could be changed to a Derbyshire key, or perhaps a Box key if that is too northern a solution?

Hi,

Tried make a visit myself a few months ago with the info it only required a courtesy call.  Tracked down the wife of the farmer who turned out to be a caver and had been in Ubley Warren / Nettle only a couple of weeks beforehand and informed us we required a key (which we didn't have).  She described it as the standard mendip key (so CSCC I assume).  Would be interested in this being confirmed as I'd still like to visit at some point.  Unfortunately I can't remember the farmers name.

Unfortunately the land owners down this way want a padlock. It has been a lot of work for a lot of years to arrive at the pro caver stance we typically have on Mendip. Re-education to a bolted gate would be as much work again. The keys are readily available to all bona fide cavers and underground explorers.

If you have any problems getting hold of a key speak to me.

No, different holes - the worrying thing was Ubley Hill is supposed to be 50 or 60 foot pitch & we landed on solid mud at 30 foot.

Only just noticed this thread. Yes, both Nettle and Ubley are indeed CSCC padlock and both have the *newer* version padlock on them. If visiting kindly do all cavers a favour and lubricate the padlock(s) with 3-in-1 Oil as it will (a) make it easier to open and (b) make the padlock last longer!

No need to ask permission but would cavers please cross via the style, which is a little further towards the farm,
rather than climbing over the fence, beware of the stinging nettles. :doubt:

I know that a party have visited within the last two months and were able to open the cave and reach the 'end' just fine. Not 100% sure of the access situation though.

Is it just me, or is there some confusion in this thread between Ubley Hill Pot and Ubley Warren Swallet / Nettle Pot?

Can't possibly imagine why that would be the case...

Check the CSCC Access Guide http://www.cscc.org.uk/access_guide/cscc_access_guide.php

They are very different caves.
On the top of the Ridge are Cow Hole and Ubley Hill Pot, neither cave is padlocked.
These are both vertical caves, U.H.P. being stuffed full of human remains and suffering from bad air.
Fairly near to Upper Flood Swallet are the caves of Nettle Pot and Ubley Warren Pot, these are both fitted with the C.S.C.C. padlocks are are a through trip,
one of the few on Mendip.  :sneaky:
