Been digging footings to extend onto the end of our house. We had to get a mini digger with a breaker because of the solid limestone.
We were cleaning the last bit of trench out by hand, dug the pick in to loosen a rock and this appeared
John came up for a look
The building inspector is due in the morning, not quite sure what he will make of this
It drops into a reasonable sized open natural passage, which is almost immediately blocked with rubble from a hole in the roof, somewhere under the slab, in the background, in the last picture.
What is interesting is, just round the corner of the house, is a drainpipe which disappears into the ground. I think when the house was built in the mid 1700s they found this hole and used it.
We are going to dig into the top of the hole in the roof tomorrow
