You can date their deposition using Cosmogenic radionuclide dating http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surface_exposure_dating This allows the sediments to be used to determine the age that streams flowed along a particular passage. Useful stuff if you are a karst geomorphologist. Look some science...
