Not sure where I read this, but as usual I got it wrong.  It appears that the second deepest shaft in the world is in Iran.  The deepest shaft or pitch or pothole or pit is in Croatian - in Vrtiglavica Pit - 743 m.  The second deepest is Ghar - e - Ghala -562 m in Kermanshar, Iran.
