Are the rather over equipped cavers in the Wemyss Cave advertisement real cavers or actors?

Yes, they are all cavers. The only one I can recognize is Alan Jeffreys aka Goon. He is the one in the yellow helmet in the rear.

Because a certain student was there, it could have been members of GUPA as well as Mr Jefferies.

There's at least 3 members of Glasgow Uni Potholing Association there (and more importantly one SUSS buff!).
Fun fact: The coil of rope that is being held by one of them is so badly coiled because of the number of takes it took them, and as a result the number of times the rope was dragged through the entrance arch before the "right shot" was found!
