The Search for The Lost Cave of Hutton

After nearly sixty years of searching the Axbridge Caving Group (ACG) finally  re-discovered the Lost Cave of Axbridge in 2011. Our next venture was to find the Lost Cave of Hutton which was entered by the Reverent Catcott, in 1757, who unearthed many bones of African animals. The cave was ?lost? and opened up again by the Vicar of Bleadon David Williams in 1828 who dug more bones and the cave was lost again. ACG started their search in the early 1970?s in a promising location finding a few small cave entrances in a very mined area. Close to these caves, in 2005, Nick Richards and Nick Harding discovered Upper Canada Cave a significant cave, then  77m long.

The search for this Lost Cave resumed in 2010 after many days toil and two days using a twelve ton digger May Tree Cave, Primrose Cave and Well Shaft Cave all located by digging in the 1970?s and subsequently ?lost?, have been added to the Upper Canada Cave system increasing its length to 103m.

All the diggers at Hutton are now convinced that we have found the Lost Cave of Hutton the 1823 survey and the current survey nearly match and the majority of historical facts match. Although this is not the longest/largest cave the ACG have found it is the most significant due to the rich and varied historical context especially as it was one of the caves that Catcott based his Treatise on the Deluge on.

The lecture theatre at Wells & Mendip Museum has been booked for the 27th November (start at 7:30pm) for a series of free lectures about this lost cave -

Chris Richards - Catcott explorations and discoveries in 1767, Williams explorations and discoveries in 1823 the digs in the 1970's.
