You don't need to pick locks - you just wait for the chain links to disappear into the cosmos. It's called entropy.

Does any observant Northern caver recognise where this has been disappeared from?

It is what was providing moral support at the top of the squeaky ladder near the bottom of the Notts II entrance climbs.

The same said support is now being provided by some string.

Chemistry in action not just entropy. (note it's only the links by the padlock that have thinned) -  Galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals I would guess, probably Nickel in the stainless steel providing the redox potential with slightly acidic water helping.

The final result looks more disordered to me!
