.svx surface mesh from common GIS formats

What can be used?

I saw TerrainTool on the UBSS website takes ASTER data and outputs it as a .svx mesh, and those are .tiff files (afaik) so it must be possible to go from one to ther other somehow - although I lack the programming knowledge to do this.

Any advice?
