This original picture from the Rock Face Series painted by Robin Gray in the 1990s. Not only does it show a composition based on fractures rock slabs but also trails of light suggested by cavers lamps moving underground.
The picture is in mixed media waxoil and acrylic on Bockingford paper. The materials used are by the Swiss Firm, Caran d?Ache and until 2018, Robin was their chief demonstrator of technique in the UK. He also represented St. Cuthberts Mill who make Bockingford paper.

The picture shows a caver climbing up to a dark recess in the hope of finding a new way on. The cave is Llygad Llwchwr, a fine river cave, under the Black Mountain in South Wales. The picture was one of four painted in Oil Pastel on Somerset Velvet Paper after an excellent trip with friends. All the others have been sold and this one was originally kept by Robin as a reminder of fun times.

This picture shows caving gear of the time. It is an Oil Pastel and was done for the poster for the first ever exhibition of cave painting to be held in a cave. Robin has shown pictures at Goughs Cave in Cheddar, in the Vercors and at Jenolan Cave in Australia but this was the first exhibition to actually be held underground in the cave its self. The cave was Kents Cavern in Devon.
