Three new books have been published:

Dynamics of underground water in the karst catchment area of the Ljubljanica springs by Janez Turk.  Zalo?ba ZRC ? ZRC Publishing

link: http://zalozba.zrc-sazu.si/index.php?q=en/node/882

The book is based on a several years long record of water levels and temperatures in caves between Planinsko polje and the springs of Ljubljanica. Correlation between the data, the discharge of the Unica river and the meteorological data gave new insight into the groundwater dynamics in relation to the recharge events as well as into hydrological role of Planinsko polje. The work clearly demonstrates caves as important observation points in karst hydrology.

Characteristics of percolation through the karst vadose zone by Janja Kogov?ek .  Zalo?ba ZRC ? ZRC Publishing

Link: http://zalozba.zrc-sazu.si/index.php?q=sl/node/86

The study of the vadose zone has been based on own continuous long-term measurements and analyses of precipitation on the surface and of several representative trickles in the vadose zone over consecutive hydrological years and it offers an explanation of the dynamics of the percolation of water and simultaneous transfer of contaminants and their impact on the dissolution of carbonate rock in the vadose zone. Emphasis is placed on a multi-parameter approach based on the simultaneous use of a number of different methods, not only tracing natural tracers but also tests with artificial tracers using different methods of injection. The research contributs to the understanding of the role of the vadose zone in the karst aquifer.

South China Karst 2, edited by Martin Knez, Hong Liu, Tadej Slabe.  Zalo?ba ZRC ? ZRC Publishing

link: http://zalozba.zrc-sazu.si/index.php?q=en/node/883

Slovene and Chinese karstologists join studies from the chosen parts of diverse Yunnan karst, from topical cone karst on south and stone forest on center to mountain karst and high plateau karst of Tibet in the north. Presented are results of research in the karst on stone forests and other types of karst surfaces, soil erosion, the formation of tufa, vegetation, the development, age and sediment of karst caves, karst waters, epikarst fauna and the protection of the natural heritage.

Acta Carsologica 39/3

Third regular issue of Volume 39 has been published in December 2010. The core  comprises of eight papers addressing different aspects of cave climate. Papers include reviews of basic processes in cave meteorology, the role of climate monitoring in tourist cave management and and fate of radon and carbon dioxide in cave environment.  Other papers cover wide range of topics. from sediment dating and analyses to geophysical methods in cave detection, evolution of subterranean life, diversity of bryophites and the effects of earthquakes in cave systems.
The complete issue is available online at

International Karstological School ?Classical Karst?

The 19th International Karstological School ?Classical Karst? will be held between June 20 and 25, 2011. It will be dedicated to the protection of the underground karst. The importance of underground karst is manifold: it is a source of drinking water, a regulator of the flow regimes of river basins, the habitat of underground organisms, the bearer of information about past palaeogeographic/climatic development, one of the best sources of information about the early development of human beings, and, among other things, an important economic category (show caves). The aim of this Karstological School is to shed light on the issues of the multiple pressures on underground karst, set out the causes of these pressures and offer preventive and remedial solutions to them, propose alternatives to the frequently inappropriate management of underground karst, and at the same time raise awareness of the importance of underground natural heritage. We will raise awareness of protection of the underground karst and collect basic Slovenian-Croatian knowledge by publishing Protection of the underground karst ? cases from Slovenia and Croatia.

You will find more information about the Karstological School in Slovene at:

http://iks.zrc-sazu.si/, in English at http://iks.zrc-sazu.si/index_eng.php, and in Croatian at http://iks.zrc-sazu.si/index_cro.php. The

International Karstological School is included in the international OP IPA Slovenia-Croatia 2007-2013 program and is financed by EU and Slovene regional funds.
