Slovenia advice

I'm going caving in Slovenia in May.
Can anybody who's been out there give some advice on underground temperatures and what to wear?
Also any advice on walks or bike rides for rest days. I think we'll be staying at the speleocamp.

Underground temperatures pretty similar to UK (perhaps slightly warmer), same clothing as caving in the UK will be fine.  (y)

Don't know about walking, cycling, etc. but there is white water rafting at Bovec in the Soĉa valley. It is some distance from Speleocamp but worth the day out.

As Les says, the kit required is pretty much the same. Don't bother bringing a wetsuit unless you want to swim through caves such as Zelske Jama though.

You'll have no problem finding good bike rides and walks, the whole place is lovely.

Have fun

Don't forget the mercury mine.  (y)

Nor the madhouse up on the hill!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idrija

Its about halfway along the road to Ljubljana from Tolmin (you sometimes get dumped there by the last bus).

To my shame I've never been to the mines themselves, but have heard very postive things. Just don't lick the walls.

"about 13% of all the mercury ever produced worldwide came from Idrija" - ref. http://www.ukom.gov.si/eng/slovenia/publications/slovenia-news/6040/6073/

"During this period, it has been estimated that over 30 000 tonnes of Hg have been released into the mine's surrounding environment" ref. http://geea.geoscienceworld.org/cgi/content/abstract/2/2/111] http://geea.geoscienceworld.org/cgi/content/abstract/2/2/111

The Soca on the other hand is the least polluted river in Europe, until it gets rebranded at the Italian border...

Probably the most beautiful river I've ever seen. And I don't blame the Italians too much, after all it's hardly a mountain stream after Nova Gorica, anyway.

BTW did you know that Nova Gorica railway station was the most popular site of defections from the Eastern Bloc to the West?

Absolutely amazing caves. Writing my trip report made me want to go again.
