How to film a 5 second sugar cube

This is one of my favourite scenes ever in a film.  The effort needed to film a sugar cube soaking up and then dropping into a cup of coffee and the associated story and sub text is rather astonishing.

I'll never look at a lump of carbide in the same way again.  As ever thoughts and contributions welcome.
