There are places available on a level 1 LCMLA training course on 17th/18th Septmber & 29th/30th October.  Although these courses are intended for cave leaders it is an excellent foundation course for anyone new to caving.  The cost is ?120.  Local caving club accommodation can be arranged if necessary (?5 per night).

The course will be based on Mendip and will cover a wide variety of essential topics.  It's all practical underground stuff rather than classroom based.
