Enough to hang by

I'm at the last pitch
with a drop of a hundred metres in my sight
but I hesitate here
for the rope in my hands looks frayed

It was years ago, I know
When I cleaned my gear and checked my rope
It was OK at the time
But now I'm not sure

Will it be enough to hang by
If I abseil in the wet and the dark
Will it break in the middle of the pitch
And drop me on my arse

Will it be enough to hang by
As my headlamp's starting to die
Hope it's good enough to hang by
Or soon I'll be learning to fly

I've rigged a lot of pitches
I've crossed a lot of streamways, scrambled down ravines
And I've never bothered you know
My kit jumbled in a pile at home

I just got back to drinking
I learned of no good reason to care
'Til I finally get here
Praying my rope's still intact

Carry my weight?
Take all of my weight on this old line?

And then unclip my safety
I'm sliding down in the dark
Halfway it seems to be good
Just a creaking of the knots
I'm reaching the bottom
I only need to drop another foot or two then down
And now I'm safe down on the rocky floor
Still in one piece
