This is my daughters short story (less than 500 words) for the BBC Radio 2 short story Competition
by Ellie Newton aged 7years

CAVE RAT ELLIE

It was a warm day the sun was shining Ellie and her dad wanted to go for a walk, her dad said lets go caving instead. So they went to a local cave to explore.

Ellie put on her waterproof suit and her wellies and walked to the entrance, she put on her orange helmet and switched her light on and went in to the cave followed by her dad.
When they were deeper into the cave, Ellie went down a different passage where she saw a small tent she looked inside the tent and there was a rat dressed in a waterproof suit and a red helmet with a light just like Ellie!
The rat came out of the tent and asked if Ellie would help him.
?Of course I will? said Ellie. The Cave Rat asked Ellie if she had a pick axe and Ellie said yes because the cave rats tools were rubbish.  So she got it out but the rat said it was too big so Ellie looked in her bag again there was a medium sized one and a very small hammer.
The Cave Rat wanted the small hammer. ?Why do you want a hammer?? asked Ellie.
The Cave Rat asked Ellie if she could keep a secret she said she could so the Cave Rat showed Ellie an area where he had been digging. He wanted some help to move more rocks.
Ellie Said ?I will help you.? They dug for what seemed like hours and hours!
They still could see a vein. A vein means the entry will still go on.
They finally managed to break and move enough rocks to find a new entry ?Hooray? shouted Ellie and the Cave Rat. They were the first ones to see it. It was amazing with the stalactites and stalagmites and pure white cave pearls.
Her dad was wandering around the cave exploring side passages and talking to other members of the cave.
They couldn?t believe it.
Ellie and the marvellous Cave Rat were hungry so they went back to the tent to get some sandwiches and a drink.
Then they went to find Ellies lazy dad, they found him at last having a cup of tea and a biscuit!
?Dad, quick come with me? shouted Ellie.
Dad and a few of the cave members jumped up and went with Ellie into the cave.
Ellie showed dad the beautiful new entrance, ?WOW!!!? everyone gasped.
Ellie had something else to show everyone, the Cave Rat jumped onto Ellies shoulder, no-one could believe their eyes. ?This is the Cave Rat that has been working down here and I helped him dig the new entrance? said Ellie.
They had a big banquet to celebrate the new passage and named it CAVE RAT ELLIE!
Everyone wanted a photo of Ellie and the Cave Rat ? The Little Explorers!!!

::)

Quality hopefully it will inspire my son to write one. Unfortunately it would probably start with 'i turned on my computer'!!!!!

I'm just weird for wanting to go under ground!!

It reminds me of the time when we started sinking the shaft on Snelsow. A few weeks later I went to a parent's evening at my daughter's primary school. The teacher said my daughter had a vivid imagination and showed me my daughter's school diary which had a picture of the dig with sheep running away and cavers with wheel barrows. Underneath it said "We went blowing up"
