Last night, I was tempted by the prospects of diving at a local site, where the South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group have recently entered a flooded drainage adit after 15 years work at the site. It was utterly miserable and I turned back after 85m, swearing never to return.

Needless to say, by half way down the first pint afterwards, we were making plans for a return.

As my wife asked me the first time I took her caving: Why do you do this for fun?

Because I like climbing, mountaineering, and canyoning. Since caving is a combination of the best parts of those things, it’s essentially an exercise in efficiency.

Honestly I don’t know. Someone once said it’s like being on the moon - it’s a totally different environment. I’m sure a lot of people can relate.

In the answer that the head of the serial killing cannibal family gave during that episode of Torchwood when they ask why they did it.

"Because it makes me happy!"
