Average light brightness for caving ?

I did a quick search but could not find what I was looking for ? Could you be kind enough to post up what ?normal? lumen you choose to use when caving (excluding slate quarries and massive holes). NOT your 'maximum' light setting, but the lumen setting you find you use the most underground...

    Fitness for caving pre-questions

Not working in the outdoor industry, something I would love to ask after reading another thread is >> what questions do Professionals politely ask to profile someone?s potential fitness for caving in advance of meeting them ??  - How difficult do you find 10 press ups ?  =  I cant !! - My...

    waterproofing a Warmbac ??

Sitting at home high on fumes gluing a bum patch on my old caving suit, that has served me well, and with a can of tent waterproofer in the garage, you guessed it, a thought occurred.... could it make sense to waterproof my old Warmbac   Much appreciate views other than >tight...

    Improved rope washing ?

Rope washing is a pain and does not seem too efficient pulling it back and forth. Has anyone thoughts about adapting a pressure washer to do the job more efficiently than a normal rope washer  :-\

Wet or Dry rope SRTing ???

Just fun ... so 'IF' your choice of caving should include SRT, do you choose to deliberately SRT on DRY, or WET rope or do you have no preference. Lets assume, in case anyone asks, that the pitch is 20m +  And what drives your decision ??? :beer2:

    Simpson's ? lost rope Friday 8th April

Unfortunately, having too fat an arse (so my ultra-slim caving partners told me) two of us were left to rig above Slit Pot and the inevitable happened; however hard we pulled the rope would only come down about a third of the way and was well and truly stuck. Beer awaits anyone who could...

    SRT - what alternative to welly's ?

We cavers have always advocated Wellington boots as cheap and functional for nearly all our needs and I really would like to avoid a discussion on the pro's and cons of welly's What interests me is if  anyone has got experience of better alternative footwear for SRTing, if price is not the...

Shrinkage of Beal Spelenium Gold rope

Can any one help with practical experience of the real shrinkage of 9.5mm Spelenium Gold The Beal web site technical spec mentions it will shrink 4% in water (and we cave on wet SRT rope), but the general web site separately mentions on first soak and slow dry Beal rope will shrink 5% (totaling...

    rope diameter question

Hi all,  I'm looking for a little information. I understand French cavers regularly ascend long pitches with two persons (suitably spaced) on the same rope.  Can anyone advise their accepted practice 'minimum' rope diameter when doing this I'm having trouble finding web reports with many...

    Petzl's new RIG descender

I see Petzl has a new descender http://www.petzl.com/en/pro/rig-compact-self-braking-descender    Just wondering if it's likely to be better than a Stop if the price is right  :-\  Seems the rope thickness may be no good though (10.5mm plus) so not yet aimed at cavers  :(

Could a battery drill lift an SRTer any useful distance ?

Need help from a maths genius out there to settle a curiosity :kiss2: Modern battery powered drills are today very powerful. If a capstan type device could be added to its chuck with correct gearing and was all nicely clipped back to a SRT harness, how far up a shaft is it likely to be able to...
