Thefts from Caves (was From Giants Hole)

I've read alot of debate over how to restrict access to caves where its needed and although in theory gates provide the best solution the issue is cost, land owner permission, and quite possibly natural england permission. And none of these things are easy to come by (case in point people have...

    which carabiners for anchors

I climb with some salewa screw gates (same as your pic) they seem excessively thin and light but ive taken a factor 2 whilst top roping on a single one of these (slack caught in tree branch belayer didnt notice hence the long fall) and there was no damage. The nose is smooth keylock (not...

Thames Water and Severn Trent Water use dowsing to detect leaks

I was quite optimistic with my probably yardstick there. If your live depended on it and you only had a coat hanger and some pliers i'm sure you'd give it a crack though.

Thames Water and Severn Trent Water use dowsing to detect leaks

Ive seen dowsing work on an archaeological dig on longis common in alderney, it accurately showed above ground the location of stretches of roman walls (pre-excavation). After seeing it in action i've used it myself to find an old drain in one of my fields. There's theories about how when you...

Pin the bolt on the mine shaft

I used that method first time i did Garlands pot but with a 2 skinny climbers belay, works alright. But I'm speaking to people about assistance so all sorted now. And the LH passage bolt, RH passage bolt, Y hang for 2nd shaft seems most appropriate for the circumstances (my poor unscaled...

Pin the bolt on the mine shaft

If anyone is interested in a fun game...If you had 4 bolts where would you put them? (Assuming there are suitable anchors available at ground level)

    Homemade rigging tripod

Thanks for the tips. So where's a good place to buy scaffolding poles from? Some Cavers seem to go through miles the stuff.

    Homemade rigging tripod

Wondering if anyone has any idea how you might go about making a tripod suitable for SRT rigging. All of the consumer options seem unnecessarily expensive.

Found a big cavern under slab but not sure where to find surveys

Ive just been out with a box full of 100m tapes and a prodding stick and found the entrance shaft. Based on the location Shepherd's mine is not the cave i found. however given its Sheperds mine seems to be semi-lost at the moment might be interesting expedition if anyone is interested?

Found a big cavern under slab but not sure where to find surveys

Ive got an interesting update, this afternoon i found "seethenmere" carved in big letters on a boulder. i guess thats the name of someone who visited maybe? ive heard of ppl carving their names into caves and churches before. And ive checked the mine databases and cant find anything within a few...

Found a big cavern under slab but not sure where to find surveys

In the passage part the walls and floor are very smooth, narrow and winding with the calcium stuff everywhere. ive never seen a mine but just get the feeling it might be natural
