2.5 Earthquake Detected in the Peak District on Tues 2nd Jan 24

"According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), the tremor's epicentre was north of the town of Buxton, close to Combs Head.

The 2.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded at about 17:30 GMT on Tuesday, and had a reported depth of 3km below ground."

That's a little more than five miles from me as the crow flies, and I have to say I didn't notice anything!

Some context for those who have recently joined: there was a fatality due to rockfall in Bull Pot, Kingsdale in 2015, shortly after an earthquake.

Earthquake, may have affected Peak District caves

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-stoke-staffordshire-66050598 A substantial (for the UK) earthquake yesterday is listed on the BGS website and made the news (see above link). Just outside the caving area in the Peak District but take extra care in any rickety boulder chokes.

As per the above linked article: "Michigan Technological University's Earthquake Magnitude Scale says magnitude tremors of 2.5 or less are "usually not felt" ". So that is probably why.

Our own BGS website states (of this earthquake):

"Felt Buxton and in the surrounding villages Dove Holes and King Sterndale. Reports described, "the floor shook", "everything seemed to rumble for a few seconds" and "felt a weak shaking"."

Mind you, the mini-earthquakes going off twice a week next door don't seem to have done much. Though they've been felt in Blue John Cavern more than once
