Hi to all you diggers.  I'm currently looking for a Chipping Hammer (air chiesel). Does anyone know for any, looking for a Good Home? (y)

IS that what you really need...? They are not much good on Limestone, and you need to be quite close to your air source....

There are ....erhhm....other means of breaking rocks

The other methods are not so "delicate" as needed in some situations, like big wobbly stuff nearby where softly softly is needed. I dont know anythign about this case though

How about Plugs and Feathers?

Plug and feathers or feather and wedge are great, but most commercial ones need a dirk greet 'ole (25mm) to fit in, so are not great for caving esp. if battery drilled.

A 14mm feather and wedge set would be top on my Xmas list....... ;)

"Other" techniques can be very delicate if you do it right, and you aren't right next to it when you do it (!).

What region is this required in....?

How much air have you got to play with?

Nick.
In excess of 10 CFM!  The Air Compressor is mobile ( Petrol Engine) working on a drive system for those hard to reach digs!

I have a Rock Drill at the moment which chiesels as well.  It has proved very well in locations where we cannot use Bang!! o_O

I've used plug and feathers in the past!  But I've never had much luck with them! o_O

Hmm, you'll struggle to run anything much bigger than this:

off 10CFM. Big hammers take tens of CFM. A 'normal' road compressor is usually in the order of 100CFM and that will run only one or two reasonable sized tools.

I have a bigger one which you could borrow to try if you want (I'm sure we can find a way to get it to Mendip for you) but if the one linked to above is any use to you, you might as well just buy one at that price.

I've played with one on the Clarke ones underground by running it off a diving bottle, and you can certainly do some damage with it. However, it only lasts about 5 minutes so having an on-site compressor is certainly the way to go.

Thanks for that Nick.  (y)

But I have been using a CP9 air chiesel (its what the dockers used in the shipyards to remove metal rivets)
That one from Machine Mart is for cutting off exhaust pipes! Its not man enough for the job!

Having looked at the spec plate on me compressor tonight, it says 50 PSI. Also I have access to a road towable one, but its tool is rather O T T for want we want to do. (y)

Ahh, you're talking my language!

I think what I have hiding in the store is a CP14 or equivalent. I'll dig it out at the weekend and take some pictures for you. I don't think I have any chisels for it. Is that a problem?

Nick.

The chiesels which fit the CP9 might fit your CP14!  Looking forward to seeing the photos! (y)
