Birks Fell Cave

On a trip down Birks Fell I got to the Block squeezed under this with some difficulty the only way on I could see from there was a small hole below the right hand side of the passage facing away from the block, this hole was too small for me to negotiate but managed to get down to cascade pitch by an exposed climb traverse further forward in the passage. On getting home I consulted Not For The Faint-Hearted and this says "About 4m beyond the Block a small hole (by the left wall) gives access to a 5m climb down to the streamway" I assume this description means direction facing away from the block, could anybody out there help are there two climbs down to cascade pitch streamway, I could'nt see any openings in the left hand side of the passage away from the Block but then again I was'nt realy looking.

It sounds like you climbed down at the right place. We we're in there on Saturday (31st May); 4 metres after squeezing through the block, there is a climb down by the left wall (facing away from the block) which is slightly exposed, back to the streamway. As far as I could see, there were no other routes available.

as i recall, there is a route avoiding the squeeze and 2m drop by the block: it begins 'upstream' of the block, at about the same level.  (ie stand at the squeeze and walk away from the block ('upstream') along the now left (true right) wall.)

a short climb or scramble leads to the stream which can be followed a short way downstream (low crawl) to a point directly below the squeeze you couldn't negotiate.

at least, i think that's how it goes...!
